The usage of internet on mobile phones (both smart phones and application-based phones) is becoming increasingly popular and common in the UK. It is also revealed that people across the UK are socializing through their mobile devices for an estimated period of 2.5 hours a day. Following this rising recognition of the mobile internet industry, cell phones are now being extensively used for the purpose of searching.

According to the ‘2011 Mobile Search Insights Study’, more than half of the mobile internet users now use the Internet several times daily from their cell phones. It was also noticed in this report that people normally used their devices for frequent searching during the evenings and the weekends mostly. A great majority of mobile internet users were observed to be searching for local retailer information like the location and opening timings of a certain place, while others were searching for a website offering a particular service or product.

According to the latest findings from the Nielsen Company, the use of mobile phone internet has been consistently escalating from 2006 to 2008. According to the report, over 100 million new internet mobile users were added to the list in 2008 along with generating $1.8b revenue. According to the ‘Mobile Media’ report conducted by Nielsen Company recently, the categories most popular among mobile internet and broadband users included: Emails, Weather, Portals, News/Politics, Internet Search, Videos, Games, Audio, Applications, and Social Networks (Facebook and Twitter). With the fluctuations of the financial market, an obvious increase of users in Business/Finance category was also noticed, with the total number of mobile users mounting from 5 million in August to 5.4 million in September.

With the increased trend of using mobile internet and searching by the users, entrepreneurs should not overlook this medium while devising their business marketing and advertising strategies. Reviewing the current statistics, it is predicted that mobile internet usage will exceed that of desktop internet by 2015.
